Enjoying a Week off School & Playing WOW

So I’m between semesters at the moment. Summer just ended, and fall starts next Monday. Lucky for me since the World of Warcraft’s Battle for Azeroth expansion just lunched. That means I can spend some time enjoying the game. Mark has been busy enjoying an event in Overwatch, so it’s just me. I had three Max level characters during legion, all alliance, a mage, warlock and druid. I only level my mage with Mark so I’ve been focusing on my Warlock. I haven’t started BFA with my druid yet.

Just the other day I was fishing in Boralus, and managed to fish up a Great Sea Ray, which in turn gave me the achievement We’re Going to Need More Saddles. It wasn’t necessarily something I was actively working but I’m happy about it none-the-less, the reward for getting that achievement was the Jade Pandaren Kite String Mount. Then not more then 10 minutes later, I fished up another Great Sea Ray which I decided to send to Mark.  I do enjoy fishing, so if I get another I’ll be posting it on the Auction hall.

All in all it’s shaping up to be a pretty relaxing week with some enjoyable game time.

Having a good teacher pays off

At the beginning of the semester, I somehow mixed up my schedule for my seven week pre-algebra class and ended up in the Tuesday/Thursday class instead of the Monday/Wednesday class. The teacher invited me to stay since I had missed my first class, telling that she would cover the same things. By the end of the class I knew I wanted to stay in her class. She was a good teacher, and I connected with her. So I asked if I could join her class and she agreed. Due to the schools being closed from bad weather and things I was three classes in before the change actually went through, and it took those changes going through before I had access to papers I needed to print and homework online. But I finally got it all straightened out. Keep in mind that I hate math, I’ve always been terrible with it, and this class was no exception and I really struggled. Well we took our finals yesterday and all my grades finally came in. I passed the class with a “B” (86%) That is astounding to me. I never, not even in high school, did that well in a math class. I’m proud of myself. I hoped for a at least a “C”, so to be getting a “B” is amazing. My teacher was a great teacher. She really knew how to explain things, and she never made you feel like you were dumb if you couldn’t figure it out, she just sat down and figured it out with you. Having a good teacher definitely pays off.

I’ve done more math in the past week than I have in years… I so need a math break. But I am glad I’m learning something new..

Today is definitely a slow cooker day…

With the weather being bad today I decided it was a good day to use the slow cooker and make some good old fashioned barbecue baked beans and wieners. I hadn’t made them in so long, and nothing says comfort food for a cold day like beans & wieners.

My first week in school has been good. It turns out math isn’t bad when you have a good teacher.  The problem is my academic advisor told me that my classes were on Tuesdays and Thursdays, but I was registered for classes on Monday’s and Wednesdays. So when I showed up on Tuesday the teacher told me I could stay as they covered the same things, but the I don’t have access to her files on the school website. I enjoyed her teaching method so much I really didn’t want to change. Her class was full, but I was able to get written permission from her to join her class. So I’m now waiting for the school two drop me out of the other class and register me into hers. I hope it doesn’t take them too long as I need access to the homework on the website.

First week in college

So my first week in college has officially begun. My first on campus class is tomorrow I’m a bit nervous about it. It’s math and I’ve never been very good at math, but I’m determined so there is that. Besides I’m married to a math genius (at least he is to me) so I should be okay. I’ve already begun my English comp class and I must say I think I’m a bit excited about it. I’ve always enjoyed writing and being able to improve those skills is something I’m glad about. In any case here I am starting my new path!

So today I have good news, I received both my admissions letter for the Medical Administrative Assistant Technology program at Cincinnati State, as well as my financial award letters. So I called today and set an appointment with my academic advisor for Monday the 18th. I’m looking forward to getting the ball rolling.

I thought long & hard before deciding that I didn’t want to go into IT. Basically it boiled down to not wanting to hate computers. As of right now I love working with computers and enjoy learning new things about them but I know if I were to make a career out of it I would essentially end up hating it & I really don’t want to do that. Also by going this route within a couple of years I can have an Associate of Applied Business degree and then continue on to a Bachelor’s degree if I want.

Running out of remote backup options…and other stuff

So for about 2 years or so I’ve been using Crashplan to have a remote backup of our home computers. It worked great for $15.00 a month I had unlimited storage for up to 10 computers. All total I was/am backing up about two and half terabytes of data. Yesterday the news went out that Crashplan will no longer be offering a consumer version of their service. I have until November 5th to figure out another option. The problem is there really is no other option, at least not one that doesn’t cost and arm and leg and that actually has a Linux client. I’m doing my best to follow the 3-2-1 rule of thumb and having a very difficult time doing so.

Just so you know the 3-2-1 rule is

  • Have 3 copies of your data
  • Have 2 local copies on different storage types (one is the original, and the other is a copy on a local external drive or Network attached storage system)
  • Have 1 backup off-site in another location.

Following this, if the original gets lost you can restore from your local copy, and if anything catastrophic ever happens (fire, lighting strike etc..etc..etc.) then you can get your data from the off-site backup. The problem is I’m running out of cost effective ways to have off-site backup.  I’m possibly looking into using Google Cloud storage, or Amazons S3. But I’m not quite sure yet.

In other news….. I went and took my placement test yesterday for college. Turns out I need two math classes. The bad news is they have no online math classes and I don’t know how I’m going to be able to the math credits I need. I’m still working on figuring that out…..

So today, I’m going to take my Placement test at Cincinnati State. Hopefully that means it wont’ be much longer before I can start classes. I’m hoping I don’t have to take too many math classes, but I’m positive there will be some as math has never been my best subject.

Math Sucks!

I seriously hate doing math work. I just seem to have a hard time grasping the higher concepts of math. I know how to do addition, subtraction, multiplication and division; but all the rules to doing things like fractions and geometry are just so hard for me and are seriously frustratingangry. It’s not for lack of trying, I have several Math & pre-algebra books for dummies, a few math apps on my phone, and I’ve been using the math tools over at Kahn Academy, and yet still I find myself utterly frustrated. I just don’t get why I have such a difficult time retaining this information.
